~~~Today, we finally got to visit the vet! He was so wonderful with lots and lots of great information! In order to show Piper who is in command (which I knew I had to do, just didn't know how - and the books weren't much help).
~~~What we need to do is need to hold her in our arms upside down and cradle her like a baby, with our hand firmly on her upper chest, close to her neck, (just under her mouth so she can't move her head down to bite) holding her down. We need to do this until she stops squirming and growling. When we get a chance when she is calm for a while, touch her paws. The Vet says that this is something that her mother would do, so doing all of this will show her that we are the boss and we are to be trusted. I asked: What about what about when she gets older and too big to hold? He said: Get down on the floor and turn her over! Oh yeah, she gets treats after each hold until she doesn't squirm any more.
~~~And, also, open her ears to check them, and also her teeth. This is something that also shows she trusts us (if she doesn't bite us!). JK, I've already been in her mouth several times to remove foreign objects. LOL
~~~ I've held her twice since then. She's NOT BITING OR SCRATCHING ME!!! WOO HOO!!!
Maybe I shouldn't be so excited... we'll see about tonight! LOL
~~~The vet suggested we go with a private trainer, rather than a Pet store. So I think we will do that, since she doesn't have all her shots yet, and the sooner we do this, the better!
~~~~BTW: The Vet was SO VERY CUTE!!! SSHHHH..... Don't tell DH!!

LOL on the cute vet! As I always tell my clients when they hire a physical inspector, "If you've gotta pay for it, you might as well enjoy the view."
*So* happy to hear the vet had some good advice. Funny, I was just holding Andy like that last night (of course, a lot easier with an 8 lb dog). But he still doesn't like me touching his paw-paws.
Off to the grocery store in a bit.
Dogs are such a pain to train.. oh .. but when they finally get it.. really get it.. they are so wonderful.. Tink is a great comfort since The King passed away.. she snuggles with me at night..
The Queen..
Well, maybe things will turn around yet. Having a puppy is like parenting for the first time. They work and think differently.
Good luck with the trainer and keep me posted!
Hugs to you and Pipes!
I just love this dog :)
PRO: That's weird that he won't let you touch his paws... hmmm.
Wish Piper was 8lbs. She's 20lbs!!!
Yeah, I can hardly wait for the next appt. ooooo.... Eye Candy! ;)
QUEEN: Aw, that's great that you have to love on you. :)
GARY: Great! Want her?
FW: You know I will!
I had never heard your vet's advice before, it sounds "pawsible" that it would work! Gosh the pup gets cuter and cuter. And it sounds as if the vet is as well....
How terrific that you have a vet who can give you constructive advice on raising your cutie. I'm so glad he's doing better.
Cheryl: Yes! We have had two muts, and never had to do anything like that. I'm just loving his advice! And YES - He is SOO CUTE!!! (the vet, not the dog)lol
Kay: Thanks Kay. I am feeling so much better that I am able to work with her to learn some manners! :)
